Gubernatorial Candidates Differ Over Natural Gas Tax

Appearing at the Jefferson-Jackson Day luncheon at the Farm Show today differed over whether they support a severance tax on natural gas production.
County Executive Dan Onorato and Auditor General Jack Wagner declined to endorse a specific severance tax plan. Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel and Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty said they support the House Democratic severance tax plan.
Republican Tom Corbett said he would prefer to look at spending cuts and revenues from natural gas leases on state land rather than a tax on gas wells. He said Pennsylvania with its coal and natural gas could make Pennsylvania energy independent.
